On Set With NETFLIX, A Creative Case Study

Overview

In June 2024, Netflix reached out to me directly, seeking high-quality architectural imagery for their newly renovated production hub in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The streaming giant acquired Q Studios in 2018, a historic facility spanning 28 acres with eight soundstages. Over the years, this studio played a role in major productions like The Avengers, Breaking Bad, and Sicario.

Six years later, Netflix unveiled its newly expanded West Coast production facility. This impressive expansion includes:

* Four new soundstages

* Three mills

* One production office

* Two stage support buildings

* Two dedicated backlot areas across 108 acres

Netflix needed a compelling set of images photographed to highlight these upgrades and showcase their investment in becoming the West Coast’s premier production facility. The best part? The wanted to utilize a local photographer for the job.

The Shoot

With over 100 acres to cover, the pre-production planning was essential. We needed to ensure we were capturing the site’s grandeur at the right moments throughout the day. Since nearly everything had been newly renovated, comprehensive coverage was a priority—both interior and exterior shots. A full location scout with the team was scheduled before the shoot date. To discuss shot lists, timing, and logistics.

To ensure efficiency throughout the day, I kept my kit and team light. A streamlined approach allowed for greater mobility and flexibility.

Commitment to Sustainability

If you’ve spent any amount of time in the film industry you know just how big of an impact these productions can have on an environment. Creating sustainable systems is imperative to the industries continued growth and success.

During our planning process, I discovered Netflix's impressive sustainability initiatives at the facility. The site features:

  • A geothermal heating and cooling system with a 300+ foot deep geothermal loop

  • On-site solar panels and battery storage

  • 50 electric vehicle fast chargers

These eco-friendly additions significantly reduce the studio’s carbon footprint and showcase Netflix’s commitment to sustainable production.

Cherry on top:

What better way to end the shoot than capturing the wide shot of the entire park—taken from over 50 feet in the air in a cherry picker. Of course, No better time for the wind to pick up, adding a bit of drama to the final frame.

Final Thoughts:

Documenting the transformation of this facility was both inspiring and rewarding. The scale of this shoot was both a creative and technical challenge—one that I thoroughly enjoyed.
